Training hummingbirds to use your Hummingbird Vineyard feeder:

Hummingbird Vineyard feeders are engineered for your satisfaction with a unique “closed path” feeding design. This design stops dripping that attracts unwanted pests and reduces maintenance by prolonging nectar life. But, you may need to train your Hummers how to use your feeder by first “priming” the feeding valve.

Priming the valve:

After filling and hanging your Hummingbird Vineyard feeder, poke a toothpick or paper clip in-and-out of the valve orifice (just once) to express a small amount of Nectar onto the valve surface. This is called “Priming” the valve. You may need to do this once a week until you get Hummers, or only just once, but when Hummers learn there is nectar behind the valve, you will no longer need to prime the valve. They will open it themselves with their long beak. If you don’t prime the valve, your Hummers may not learn there is any food in the feeder because the design does not allow nectar to sit open and exposed to the air.

Most feeders use an “open path” design where nectar is exposed through an open hole… which is why they may drip when the wind blows, attract pests and require more maintenance. But Hummingbird Vineyard’s unique “closed path” design provides a low maintenance solution so you can spend more time enjoying your Hummers without wasps or ants and less time cleaning.

Locating your feeder:

If you have other feeders that drip, it may be necessary to take them down or relocate them away from your new feeder. Then hang your Hummingbird Vineyard feeder in a conspicuous area, prime the valve, and be patient. Hummers should instinctively start using the new feeder once they find it and learn there is nectar inside. Hummingbirds are creatures of habit and once a habit is established, they usually continue that pattern.

Making Nectar:

We supply 100% natural nectar called Cabernet SauvignYUMM in pre measured packets for our 375ml and 750ml wine bottle feeders. To fill a 375ml Feeder; Bring 1 and 1/4 cups of water to a boil and then add the entire contents of one "375" (small) packet. Stir to dissolve, then let cool before adding to your feeder.
To fill a 750ml Feeder; Bring 2 and 1/2 cups of water to a boil and then add the entire contents of one "750" (large) packet. Stir to dissolve, then let cool before adding to your feeder. You don't have to fill the bottle. You can choose to fill it maybe half way and store the remaining Nectar in the fridge for the next time you rinse and fill the feeder.

You can also make your own nectar with pure white granulated sugar. Mix 4:1 ratio (4 parts water to 1 part sugar). Bring to a boil so the sugar dissolves completely and then let cool before adding to your feeder.

We appreciate your business and your satisfaction is our ultimate goal. Feel free to contact us.
